Modigliani: Beyond the Myth
Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884 - 1920), Seated Nude, 1917.
"When Modigliani?s nudes were first exhibited, in 1917, they were found so obscene that police closed the exhibition. What shocked contemporary viewers was the way Modigliani reduced the female body to its sculptural aspect, abstracting it while still focusing on various details. By simultaneously aestheticizing and eroticizing the nude, the artist restores to the nude her real, sexualized body."
