“So why "The Simpsons"?”
Perhaps Pynchon was flattered by a May 2002 episode in which Lisa Simpson is bowled over by a college girl carrying one of his more difficult books. LISA (awed): "Are you reading `Gravity's Rainbow'?" COLLEGE GIRL (snidely): "Well, rereading."
"Simpsons" writer and executive producer Al Jean confirmed in a recent interview with the entertainment website IGN.com that Pynchon will indeed play himself on a show in the new 15th season, which begins next month. In the episode in question, a novel by blue-coiffed homemaker Marge Simpson wins endorsements from Pynchon and airport-novel writer Tom Clancy, among others.
According to Al Jean, the cartoon version of Pynchon will be wearing a paper bag over his head.
como conseguiram que pynchon…
IGN DVD: How did you get him?
[Editor's note: For the unfamiliar, Pynchon is the most reclusive and elusive author in the U.S. He's never does interviews, has never been photographed, and people don't even know where he lives. He makes Calvin & Hobbes cartoonist Bill Watterson look like a publicity hound.]
Al Jean: We got him. (laughs) He was really nice.
IGN DVD: Oh well of course, he's not seen, right?
Al Jean: He's wearing a paper bag over his head, but it is his voice.
IGN DVD: Oh that's priceless. I hope somebody gets the joke. Actually, I think getting J.K. Rowling is a bigger coup because she is better-known.
Al Jean: Well, she likes the show, we got her by satellite, I think from Scotland, and she'd just had her baby.
e um blogger, tv editor, esteve mesmo para o ver, mas…
'Yeah, they're coming in right after you leave.'
WHAT!?!
And then it turns out that this guy Bill records voices for The Simpsons. Mostly, the show is recorded in L.A., but whenever talent is in NY, they always go to Bill. So I'm freaking out rather seriously now. 'So is Julie Kavner about to walk through the door as I'm leaving?' I scream (I've wanted to be her best friend since the Tracy Ullman show). And he was like, no, no. They were just doing some guest appearance voices today: Thomas Pynchon.
And I'm like, Back the Fuck Up!
The Thomas Pynchon, author of 'Gravity's Rainbow', 'V', 'The Crying of Lot 49', who is never photographed, interviewed, etc. around whom an entire literary cult is formed?
Yes.
